When Data tried his hand at stand-up comedy, he bombed. His timing was off, and it didn’t help that his jokes were staler than month-old bread. However, if there’s one crew member who could pack them into clubs night after night, it’s Worf. You may be thinking that everybody’s favourite bat’leth-wielding warrior would make a lousy performer on the mic, but try out some of these wonderful examples of his comedy stylings from the Next Generation, Deep Space 9 and the films…
1)“Nice hat.” In Emissary (DS9): A great line to use on any hecklers out there, this one was directed at the usually-prim Major Kira upon first meeting her. She’s been playing dress-up on the holodeck with Jadzia Dax, and is flustered. Worf shares that feeling, but ever the diplomat he diffuses it with his usual deadpan manner. Be thankful he didn’t meet the Nagus and say, “Nice ear-hair.”
2)“That was NOT a Klingon song!” In Parallels (ST:TNG): Some comedians find the comedy in focusing on the microscopic details, and Worf’s no different. It’s his birthday, and his best friends have gathered to sing For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow in Klingon. Worf could fly off on a rant that they didn’t sing Happy Birthday, but instead opts to complain about the joviality of it. Now THAT”S comedy!
3)“Assimilate THIS!” In First Contact: Learning the art of punchlines from Schwarzenegger action films, this is Worf’s statement when he put a kink in the Borg’s plans by blasting the Enterprise’s assimilated deflector array. He could have let his actions speak for themselves, but ever the professional he can’t help but give the fans something to both laugh at and cheer. Borg critic 18 of 25’s response was a less-pithy, “No, YOU assimilate this.” How childish.
4)
“Sir, I must protest, I am NOT a merry man!” In Qpid (ST:TNG): Worf isn’t a prop comedian. Such things are beneath him, and when Q transports the Enterprise crew to Sherwood Forest and play at Robin Hood, his frustration is clearly evident. With his straight delivery, Worf’s ironic line gets the biggest laugh of the episode and makes Deanna Troi’s bow-and-arrow gag look like something soft, brown and steamy. Like a teabag.
5)“I have not had a chance to meet all the new crew members…” In Insurrection: Some can argue that he seriously didn’t know that Captain Picard’s reference to Gilbert and Sullivan was about the composing duo, but he’s pretty clued up on the music scene. Maybe he was just confused in a high pressure situation? Or maybe he was just pulling a swift one on Picard for the benefit of the audience. Thankfully neither of them confuses the composers with Gilbert O’Sullivan and sings Alone Again (Naturally) instead of A British Tar.
6)“Comfortable chair.” In The Emissary (ST:TNG): In a bid to put some old Klingons at ease, Worf gets to play at being captain of the Enterprise. He likes it too, and isn’t afraid to say it. But in typical Worf fashion his subtle joke is a gut-buster, and it’s a miracle Riker didn’t wet his pants laughing. Maybe that’s a deleted scene?
7)Dating advice to Wesley In The Dauphin (ST:TNG): There’s too much to quote here, but when Wesley seeks advice on romance he turns to Worf, clearly a sign of Wes’s voice-breaking overriding his genius brain. Worf’s explanation of the women being violent while the men read poetry is hilarious, and even just mentioning it makes Worf excited. His facial expressions during this agitated state almost put Rowan Atkinson to shame!
8)
“I’m beginning to see the appeal of this program!” In A Fistful Of Datas (ST:TNG): When Worf gets to spend some playtime on the holodeck with Alexander, they enter a Wild West scenario where he’s the sheriff. It’s a dreadful combination, and he’s not having fun until it turns violent. His response to this is the truth uttered in jest, and he even
cracks a disturbing smile. Some have it, some don’t… Worf DEFINITELY has it in spades!
9)“Irving Berlin.” In Nemesis: It’s hard to tell if he’s drunk too much, fears the upcoming nude wedding ceremony of the Trois on Betazed, or just can’t stand Data’s singing. It doesn’t matter, as Worf’s knowledge of music is once again on display with this hilariously melancholic statement. It’s a moment that Tony Hancock would have loved, and always raises a smile.
10)“That is a joke. I get it. It is not funny, but I get it.” In Change Of Heart (ST:DS9): After Worf has explained to Jadzia Dax how he was the funny guy on the Enterprise, she drops a J-bomb on him by saying how dull that ship must have been. Playing the George to her Gracie, he trumps her comedy card with his own gem. DS9 is going to be his new improv club, and he’ll be there for a while. He strongly encourages everyone to try the veal at Quark’s! Goodnight!

Hi Rick,
Great article as usual, Worf has some great one liners, I love that youtube video ’25 great worf son of mogh quotes’. My absolute favourite is assimilate THIS! which got a huge cheer in the cinema when I saw it. I also love the quote from when Riker says to him (regarding the Defiant), “tough little ship” and Worf says “little!” (was that ‘All good things@ or ‘First Contact’? I’ve just got up and my brain’s not working. I also like ” You are fully dilated to 10 centimetres, you may now give birth”.
Q has a lot of great one liners too.

There is an episode where Worf walks into Riker’s quarters. Riker is putting down a shot of bourbon or whiskey. Worf says “Sorry to disturb you. You are busy.” Obviously taking the sport of drinking as seriously as a former engineer. What episode was that?

In my humble opinion, nothing is funnier than
life forms
you tiny little life forms
you precious little life forms
where
are
you
the fact that Brent ad-libbed this, and the rest of the actors were able to hold their faces, has become one of the Great Mysteries of the Universe to me
