See Star Trek in the open air

Mac Birmingham is offering open air screenings of several films including Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Now in its second year, mac’s outdoor screenings promise to offer a whole new experience for cinema goers this summer. Sundown Cinema: Out of this world features four classic, award winning sci-fi films, Alien (Fri 8 Aug, 9pm), Back to the Future (Fri 22 Aug, 8.45pm), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Fri 5 Sep, 8.30pm) and Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Fri 13 Sep, 8pm) – all taking place in mac’s open air arena. Not only will audiences see some fantastic classic films of their genre, they will also enjoy an all-round experience with themed events, menus, décor, music and staff in costume, with an opportunity for cinema goers to win prizes for best dressed film character. Tickets cost £10 (£8) for each screening with food and beverages priced separately and served from 5pm onward.

Kicking off the season this August is Oscar and Bafta awarded Alien (15), directed by Ridley Scott, starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt and John Hurt. Audiences can enjoy an Alien Brain Haemorrhage Cocktail – peach schnapps, Baileys, blue curaco and grenadine syrup, alongside a Raspberry Ripley – vanilla ice cream served with raspberry sauce, topped with fresh raspberries. Best dressed character on the night wins two tickets to Back to the Future.

For the Oscar winning open air screening of Back to the Future (PG), starring a young Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd, mac’s bar will be transformed into a 50’s style diner. To build the atmosphere audiences will enter the bar to classic 50’s music from The Sugar Stomp djs. Adults can enjoy a 50’s inspired spice rum and Coke with vanilla float, with a mocktail version for children minus the rum.  A nod to some of the characters in the film, sees the diner menu include The Biff Burger – an 8oz cheeseburger served with relish, onion rings, fries and salad alongside a Chicken McFly burger and Lou’s Classic Sundae – vanilla ice cream, topped with chocolate sauce, whipped cream and a maraschino cherry.

The season continues in September with Invasion of the Body Snatchers (U) and Star Trek: The Motion Picture (U) with beverages including Screaming Sangria – classic red wine punch with chopped fresh fruit, gin and lemonade and a mocktail Vulcan Fruit punch – a fresh orange and cranberry mix. Trekkies can also enjoy a traditional Starship Enterprise meal of Plomeek Soup – a delicious vegetable based out of this world concoction.
