J.J. Abrams Will Still Be A Producer On Future Star Trek Movies

With the announcement of JJ Abrams to direct the next Star Wars film, what does this mean for Star Trek? After all, Abrams was the director responsible for bringing Star Trek back to life in 2009 and as long as both franchises have existed their fans have been at war with one another.

A statement from Bad Robot said: “After a bevy of emails and phone calls, the formalities have been wrapped up, and at long last everyone can exhale and properly share the word with an excited Internet.”
“Yes, JJ Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII, the first of a new series of Star Wars films to come from Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy. Abrams will be directing and Academy Award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay.”

Paramount Vice Chairman Rob Moore said “J.J. will continue to develop projects for us including a new ‘Mission: Impossible,’ and he is committed to produce another Star Trek,” Moore said Friday afternoon.

The directors chair would seem to be up for grabs for Star Trek 3. The last time Abrams passed off a franchise to another director he selected Brad Bird to make Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

  1. Yay!!! I am thrilled to have more Trek despite my few problems with the first movie. The ‘verses are different enough that Abrams should be able to do both without it seeming like cross-over movies.

“as long as both franchises have existed their fans have been at war with one another”

That may be true for the original fans, but many to most of us young enough to grow up with both do not hold this press-encouraged rivalry. Many of us who only geek-out over one openly enjoys both. In fact I know of several fan groups, including one I am in, which work together well. We do sometimes playfully josh each other in public but behind the scenes, where the real work is, we help each other.
