New book marks 50 years of Star Trek with analysis of key social and cultural themes

New book marks 50 years of Star Trek with analysis of key social and cultural themes

On 8th September 2016, Star Trek turns 50. Since the first episode, ‘The Man Trap’, was broadcast in 1966, this vast entertainment franchise has released over 700 installments, across five live-action TV series, a spin-off cartoon, and 13 cinema releases. To mark the golden anniversary this year, Routledge have commissioned a Second Edition of Michele and Duncan Barrett’s acclaimed 1999 book Star Trek: The Human Frontier. This new edition is extensively revised and expanded by over a third, now covering all 50 years of Star Trek’s output, including the most recent series Enterprise, and the trilogy of blockbuster movies released by J.J. Abrams since 2009.   The book is launched in London on 8th September 2016, exactly 50 years to the day since Star Trek was first broadcast.     Reviews for the first edition (1999)   ‘Star Trek has been subject to a lot of scrutiny by literary and cultural critics … The bad conscience that many have about serious discussion of popular culture means that Star Trek can still be read simplistically, as a stalking-horse for denouncing the modernity of the American century. The Barretts are more subtle. A television series is a product of a variety of creators and so, inevitably, a rich complex of signs, hints and idealisms. There is no final reading of Star Trek, just an endless journey.’   –          Book of the Day, The Independent   ‘The most interesting, and probably the best, study of the actual Star Trek programs and films that I have seen. It is scholarly and informative, and also very well written, quite accessible to the general reader.’   –          Science Fiction Research Association Review   ‘There are only a handful of book length surveys of Star Trek, and this mother-and-son collaboration is a welcome contribution to those. It provides a valuable overview of the programme from its original appearance 35 years ago, tracing the ways in which successive series have reproduced and challenged the original “liberal humanist” ethos of Star Trek.’   –          New Formations   In a world shrunk by modern transport and communication, Star Trek has maintained the values of western maritime exploration through the discovery of ‘strange new worlds’ in space. Throughout its fifty-year history, the ‘starry sea’ has provided a familiar backdrop to an ongoing interrogation of what it means to be human.   This book charts the developing Star Trek story from the 1960s through to the present day. Although the core values and progressive politics of the series’ earliest episodes have remained at the heart of Star Trek throughout half a century, in other ways the story it tells has shifted...

Star Trek 2017 – What we know so far

A new Star Trek series was announced last year, this is what we know so far about who is involved. The new show will be available on CBS All Access an online/on demand service but also available on other platforms worldwide. Alex Kurtzman (Executive Producer) Kurtzman co-wrote and produced the blockbuster films Star Trek (2009) with Roberto Orci, and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) with Orci and Damon Lindelof. The new series will be produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout. Kurtzman and Heather Kadin will serve as executive producers. Heather Kadin (Executive Producer) The development head at Kurtzman’s production company, Secret Hideout. Bryan Fuller (Executive Producer/Showrunner/Co-Creator) Self professed Star Trek geek who watched and loved the Trek series “Deep Space Nine” and set out to write for them. At the time, Star Trek had an open script submission policy and Fuller contributed a spec, leading to a pitching opportunity. When he had sold a couple of stories to Deep Space Nine, Fuller was hired to be a full staff writer for sister Trek series “Voyager” in its fourth season. He worked on Voyager for the remainder of its seven-year run, working his way up to co-producer of the series. His IMDB page mentions that the show will be in the same time frame as the current movies but set on a different starship to the Enterprise. I don’t know the validity of this idea and it could just be rumour. Rod Roddenberry (Executive Producer) Son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and Majel Barrett. No real experience working on Star Trek, but has made documentaries about his fathers work. Fans have had mixed reactions about this appointment. Moral dilemmas, human issues, complex characters, and a genuine sense of optimism: These are the cornerstones of Star Trek and are what have made it such an influential and beloved franchise for the last 50 years. While I will always be humbled by its legacy and the legions of fans who are its guardians, it’s a genuine honor to be joining a team of imaginative and incredibly capable individuals whose endeavor it is to uphold the tenets of Star Trek’s legacy while bringing it to audiences in a new era and on a contemporary platform. Trevor Roth (Executive Producer) Head of Roddenberry Entertainment and business partner of Rod Roddenberry. Worked with Rod Roddenberry on the documentary Trek Nation. Nicholas Meyer (Writer/Consulting Producer) The Writer/Director that was involved with all the even numbered (the good) TOS films has been hired as a writer for the new series. Star Trek VI has been mentioned as inspiration. This news has been very popular with fans. I think it’s going to be a...

Nicholas Meyer to join the new Star Trek TV show

Nicholas Meyer the writer and director, who was involved in the first three even numbered Star Trek films is to join the writing staff that is bringing us a new Star Trek TV show in 2017. Below is what StarTrek.com have said so far: It’s official. Bryan Fuller, who will co-create, produce and serve as showrunner of the upcoming Star Trek series, has just announced the news that Nicholas Meyer has joined the show’s writing staff. “Nicholas Meyer chased Kirk and Khan ’round the Mutara Nebula and ’round Genesis’ flames, he saved the whales with the Enterprise and its crew, and waged war and peace between Klingons and the Federation. We are thrilled to announce that one of Star Trek’s greatest storytellers will be boldly returning as Nicholas Meyer beams aboard the new Trek writing staff,” said Executive Producer, Bryan Fuller. Meyer, of course, is beloved by Star Trek fans worldwide for directing (and co-written, uncredited) Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, co-writing Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and co-writing and directing Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. The new Star Trek series, produced by CBS Television Studios, will launch in early 2017. In the U.S., a special premiere episode will air on the CBS Television Network and all subsequent first-run episodes will be available exclusively on CBS All Access. The series will also be available on television stations and platforms in local countries around the world. I like many others are really excited about this news, the next TV show is shaping up to be...
